Hirsch Reads When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi w/Molly Haile

October 28 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

2021 Hirsch Reads-When Breath Becomes Air-Paul Kalanithi, Oct. 28th @ 5:30-7:00pm w/Molly

When Breath Becomes Air is a profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis who attempts to answer the question ‘What makes a life worth living?’  The book chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. Join us as Molly Haile leads a discussion of this inspirational story.

A few words from a reader on Goodreads:  ” Personally, I found it deeply moving and life-affirming. There were times I felt tears forming in my eyes, and other times I read a passage several times to ponder what the author was expressing. I can’t think of another book that brought me so close to the soul of another person. […] I think most will find it rewarding and touching and well worth the risk of the emotions it might elicit.”

When Breath Becomes Air is a New York Times bestseller, spending 68 weeks on the non-fiction bestseller list. It was also a 2017 Pulitzer Prize  Biography or Autobiography, finalist.

Matt McCarthy of USA Today gave it 4 out of 4 stars and said, “It’s a story so remarkable, so stunning, and so affecting that I had to take dozens of breaks just to compose myself enough to get through it.”  Nick Romeo of The Boston Globe wrote that it, “possesses the gravity and wisdom of an ancient Greek tragedy.”
